This course will provide independent filmmakers with the necessary information to sell, market and distribute their own films in the event that they have yet failed to attract an industry distributor or chosen to go it alone.
At the end of the course, students will be confident enough to handle or directly outsource and influence all aspects of this most elusive of all the stages involved in the overall production process.

Week 1: Overview of the market currently.
The facts on theatrical success rates and the growth of DVD. What is happening in the market-place with the rise of Digital Cinema. How to raise awareness for your film. Positioning it’s USP. Test Screenings.

Week 2: Creating the Initial Marketing campaign.
The story – what is the angle, the hook, the genre? Do the cast have any market value and if so, how to exploit that. Creating the buzz. Viral campaigns. |

Week 3: Selling The film.
Selling the film rights to buyers and distributors and selling the film concept and it’s potential to exhibitors. How to get a film out into the marketplace. Going the festival route initially. Film markets.
Week 4: Physical distribution.
Understanding the ‘Nut’ figure. Exploiting digital releases. Press Releases, PR, critics and generating word of mouth. Niche audiences. Poster and publicity design. Sponsorship and tie-ins. |
